A road bicycle is a bicycle designed for use primarily on paved roads, as opposed to off-road terrain. The term is also a synonym for the term racing bicycle. In general road bicycles have drop handlebars and multiple gears, although there are single and fixed gear varieties.
A mountain bike or mountain bicycle (all terrain bicycle) is a bicycle designed for off-road cycling, including jumps, and traversing of rocks and washouts, and steep declines, either on dirt trails, logging roads, or other unpaved environments. Most mountain bikes use 26 inch bicycle wheels with wide, knobby tires for extra traction and shock absorption.
Comfort bikes typically have a modified mountain bike frame with a tall head tube to provide an upright riding position, 26-inch wheels, and 1.75 or 1.95-inch (45 - 50 mm) smooth or semi-slick tires. Comfort bikes typically incorporate such features as front suspension forks, seat post suspension with wide plush saddles, and drop-center, angled North Road style handlebars designed for easy reach while riding in an upright position.
A hybrid bicycle is a bicycle designed for general-purpose utility or commuter cycling on paved and unpaved roads, paths, and trails. In general, hybrids use the mountain bike's triple crank along with handlebars that give a more upright posture than road bicycles. They also usually use one of the kinds of brakes used on mountain bikes, namely liner pull, or disc.
A beach cruiser is typically a single geared bicycle that you reverse pedal to brake. They are best used on flat surfaces and at low speeds and have been known to work on hard packed sand as well. Beach cruisers generally have heavy, steel frames and wide tires. This combination makes them relatively slow in comparison to either a road bike or a mountain bike.
The tandem bicycle or twin is a form of bicycle designed to be ridden by more than one person. Tandems can reach relatively high speeds, especially downhill and on flat to rolling terrain.
A surrey is a type of bike which usually comes in 2 and 4 person configurations. Surreys feature a single speed and hand brake, have 4 wheels, a steering wheel and are a great way to spend quality time with the family. Often times, a surrey will also be equipped with a canvas top or canopy.
A kid's or children's bike is simply a smaller version of an adult bike. Kid's bike sizes are determined by wheel diameter, not seat height and frame size as is the case with adult bicycles.
